Figure it out
2021 Talitha De Decker
For Figure it out, Talitha De Decker and her team started from the tension between imagination and memory. Do you remember what it was like to return, as an adult, to a place where you once went on holiday as a child? You found yourself in an absurd world. Your childhood memories turned out to be completely distorted. Children know that friction all too well: a chair that once seemed impossible to climb turns out, just a year later, to be absurdly small. Perspective is relative, because when I grow up, everything around me gets smaller. Right?
In Figure it out, perspective, scale, and patterns (or the disruption of them) take centre stage. The piece plays with elements like the body, multiple bodies, the set, and above all, the relationship between them. A specific projection technique also adds a visual layer of perspective play.
Angular, precise movements combined with playful music and striking visual scenes make this rather abstract dance performance captivating for both young and old. The formally structured whole leaves room for personal interpretation and invites the audience to associate freely and let their imagination run wild.
Fresh music, playful choreographic puzzle pieces, and a carefully designed scenography create a fusion of fantasy and reality — a game of colours and shapes, especially for little people with big dreams.
